Yoga Asanas (the postures that are practised in a yoga class) are designed to keep the body healthy and reduce stress. The postures work on the spine, muscles, organs and glands. They significantly help to increase flexibility and strength, as well as help to control the mind and aid deep relaxation. This asana sequence is based on the teachings of the Sivananda tradition. It is suitable for all levels.

.

Pranayama (breathing exercises) are practiced in any classes over one hour. Kaphalabati purifies the lungs and nasal passages. It stimulates every tissue in the body, and expells carbon dioxide allowing more oxygen to be taken up, making the blood richer. The movement of the diaphram stimulates the organs above it. It also calms and relaxes the mind. Analoma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing) is the second pranayama practiced. This exercise helps to calm and balance the mind. Naturally our breath flows predominantly through one nostril for 2 hours then through the other for the same time. For many people this is often out of balance, Analoma Viloma helps rectify this.

Relaxation is an important part of each class, allowing the body to rejuvenate. Many forms of modern-day relaxation keep the mind and body stimulated. Learning to relax properly can significantly help to reduce stress.

Yoga originated in India several thousand years ago. Yoga literally means Union, this is commonly understood to mean union between mind and body but in fact refers to the union of the individual Self and the Universal Conciousness. The Yoga we practise in the West is just one part of a much bigger practice aimed at achieving this.
